In an emergency, every second counts, and on a sunny February day in 2020, a diver’s life was saved thanks to the quick response of Capt. Greg Mallek of Sea Tow Fort Lauderdale.

While on patrol in Hillsboro Inlet, Capt. Mallek received an emergency call from the captain of a dive boat who reported an unconscious diver needing immediate medical assistance. Capt. Mallek happened to be nearby and rushed to the boat’s location to assist. Arriving on-scene just minutes later, the diver and two dive boat crew members boarded the Sea Tow vessel with the injured diver. The two crew members continually performed CPR while Capt. Mallek headed to shore for additional help.

During the trip back, Capt. Mallek coordinated with his dispatch center to contact 911 so an ambulance would be waiting to further assist the diver. The diver survived because of the quick response from Capt. Mallek and all involved in the rescue.

“This was a case of being in the right place at the right time,” Capt. Mallek recalled. “I’m just glad I was able to provide help.”

For his actions, Capt. Mallek received the coveted Life Saving Award in 2020 from Sea Tow Services International.
